Sculptor Michael Murphy is bringing his perceptual art to Main South. The setting for his work will be a storefront addition to a large, set-back triple decker residential property. A boxy, single-story storefront attached to an older residential structure is not unusual in Main South today, as many owners added retail spaces to take advantage of burgeoning foot traffic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, increase their property value, and raise additional rental income. From the 1930s, the shops at 927 Main Street changed hands frequently, as the usual neighborhood conveniences rotated through – coffee shops, tailors, confectioners, produce dealers, variety stores, dairy barns, and eventually bodegas and pizzerias.
