Flagg Street Elementary School

Site of a new 2018 POW! WOW! mural in 2018

New York artist, Lexi Bella, will paint at the Flagg Street School as part of POW! WOW! Worcester 2018 between August 31st to September 9th!
In the post-war era, single-family home building blossomed on Worcester's west side and schools in the area could not keep up. By the 1950s, for example, Midland Street Elementary School had opened up three basement classrooms and constructed four portable structures to meet growing student populations due to the Baby Boom. Flagg Street Elementary School was intended to relieve crowded conditions at four neighborhood schools and encourage further suburban development. When it opened in March 1954, the sidewalk had not even been poured. Following the then popular fashion of low-slung, single level, brick schools, the structure at Flagg Street appears as if it could have been pulled from any mid-century suburban development.
